Following a series of disciplinary breaches during their 0–2 quarter-final defeat at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed heavy fines and suspensions on Algeria for actions it said brought the game into disrepute.
CAF fined Algeria for multiple offences committed by players, officials, and supporters. The sanctions include a $25,000 fine for the inappropriate conduct of players and team officials, as well as $5,000 for involvement in a general brawl.
Algerian supporters were also penalised for unruly behaviour. CAF imposed a $50,000 fine for offensive gestures directed at match officials, $10,000 for an attempted pitch invasion, and $5,000 for the use of smoke inside the stadium.

In addition, CAF handed Algeria a further $50,000 fine for provocative actions by fans who displayed banknotes to suggest corruption within the football body an act describing it as “offensive and abusive.”
On the disciplinary front, goalkeeper Luca Zidane received a two-match suspension for a physical confrontation with Nigeria’s Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. Right-back Rafik Belghali was banned for four matches, with two games suspended, after threatening match officials.
Reacting to the decision, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) criticised CAF’s ruling, describing it as unfair and confirming its intention to appeal the sanctions.
CAF stated that the punishments were unavoidable due to what it described as repeated condescending and unsporting actions by Algerian players, officials, and fans before, during, and after the match an encounter that marked Algeria’s exit from the tournament eventually won by Senegal.
Meanwhile, CAF is also expected to convene to review incidents involving Senegal during the AFCON final against Morocco. Senegal could face sanctions after their players left the pitch for 17 minutes in protest when the referee awarded a enalty against them.
