The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has officially parted ways with head coach Dorival Junior following a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Argentina in the World Cup qualifiers.
Despite Brazil sitting fourth in the South American qualifying group and remaining in contention for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the loss to their fierce rivals proved to be the final straw for Dorival.
Short-Lived Tenure Ends Abruptly
Dorival, 62, took charge of the national team in January 2024 after Brazil failed to secure Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti. His tenure began promisingly with a 1-0 victory over England at Wembley, and he went on to secure seven wins, six draws, and three losses in 16 games.
However, inconsistent performances and disappointing results, including defeats to Uruguay and Colombia, raised concerns about Brazil’s ability to reclaim its dominance on the world stage. The crushing loss to Argentina only intensified calls for change.
In a brief statement, the CBF confirmed Dorival’s departure:
“The board wishes him success in his continued career. From now on, the CBF will work to find a replacement.”
Who’s Next for Brazil?
With Dorival gone, speculation is mounting over who will take charge of the five-time world champions. Reports from Brazilian media suggest that Al-Hilal coach Jorge Jesus is the frontrunner for the role. The Portuguese manager has a strong reputation in Brazil, having previously led Flamengo to Copa Libertadores glory in 2019.
Meanwhile, the CBF has not given up on their long-standing interest in Ancelotti. The Italian coach was their top target before Dorival’s appointment, and according to The Athletic, Brazil may make another attempt to lure him for the 2026 World Cup.
With just months to go before the tournament, Brazil faces a crucial decision. Will they turn to an experienced international manager or trust another homegrown coach to revive their hopes? The footballing world will be watching closely.
