Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has expressed uncertainty over Victor Boniface’s return to action. Leverkusen travel to face Brest tomorrow in the Champions League, and the Nigerian striker who was in a car accident on Sunday is highly doubtful for the encounter.
Boniface sustained minor hand injuries from the accident and has been reported to be recovering well. But it is not certain yet if he will be in the lineup when Xabi Alonso’s men continue their Champions League campaign on Wednesday. Rolfes informed the press that he has been in contact with the Nigerian and confirms there’s no cause for alarm. He said, “I had a brief conversation with him yesterday, but I haven’t seen him today.
“He’s doing well, but it’s clear that such a situation is not easy and that you have to try to bear it for a while. Of course, we are all very happy that he came out of this situation basically unscathed.
“We will talk to him soon and see what the situation is – whether he travels with the team or not is still up in the air at the moment.”
Boniface joined Leverkusen in the summer of 2023 and went on to establish himself as an important member of the squad that went unbeaten to claim the Bundesliga title. He finished the season as the club’s highest goalscorer in the league with 14 goals. He has continued his impressive form for the team this season with five goals and an assist from seven Bundesliga games. If the 23-year-old misses the trip to Brest, he could be replaced in the lineup by Patrik Schick.
Alonso’s men are fourth on the Bundesliga log after seven games this season, with four victories, two draws and a defeat. Similarly, they stand fourth in the league phase of the Champions League with two wins in as many games. They travel to face French side Brest who have also won its two opening games.
