The Lagos State Government in collaboration with Yucateco Boxing Promotions, commissioned the Babajide Sanwo-Olu Boxing Gymnasium at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.
The development was part of Sanwo-Olu’s administration’s commitment to fostering youth engagement and sports development.
Speaking at the event, the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu, emphasised that creating alternative opportunities for youths to channel their energy remains one of the best ways to promote empowerment and engagement.
He noted that sports, particularly boxing, serve as a powerful tool for self-realization.
“Boxing is unique in our community because we have a vibrant youth population, represented here by the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende. With this facility, we can produce champions,” he stated.
The Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, acknowledged that while the government cannot reach all youths simultaneously, capturing them in groups makes it easier to take them off the streets.

According to him, the facility provides a well-structured space for them to train, burn energy, and prepare for global competitions for youths passionate about boxing.
“As a government, we cannot do it alone, which is why we continue to seek partnerships. This gymnasium is a product of such collaborations. Our goal is to replicate this initiative across the five divisions of the state.
“By doing so, we can redirect groups of youths from the streets into the boxing arena, where they can channel their energy, hone their skills, and compete internationally,” he added.
Fatodu commended the donor and Chief Executive Officer of Yucateco Boxing Promotions, Imadu Omonlei Yakubu, for the remarkable initiative, which provides young boxers in the state with an opportunity to refine their skills and excel in the sporting industry.
