Mikel Arteta has fired a warning to Arsenal’s title challengers after a dominant victory over Aston Villa underlined their Premier League credentials.
Arsenal swept aside Villa 4–1 at the Emirates Stadium to move five points clear at the top of the table, delivering a powerful statement in the title race.
Arteta described the performance as further evidence that his side are ready to finally lift the Premier League trophy, having narrowly missed out after finishing second for the past three seasons.
“It’s been an excellent year for me, bAsenaoth personally and professionally,” Arteta said.
“The players, the staff, and everyone at the club make it a joy to come to work every day. Looking ahead to 2026, we know exactly what we want. It will take hard work every day, but we are on the right path.”
Arsenal turned the match decisively in the second half with a ruthless spell that overwhelmed their visitors. A costly error from Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez proved pivotal, as he failed to deal with a corner, allowing Gabriel Magalhães to score from close range.
Martin Zubimendi quickly added a second, before Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus finished clinically to complete the emphatic win.
Ollie Watkins scored a late consolation goal for Villa, but it did little to mask a disappointing night for the visitors, who were punished for not making the most of a strong first-half display.
After earlier setbacks against Villa and Liverpool, and draws with Manchester City and Chelsea, this victory marks a significant breakthrough for Arsenal in their pursuit of the title.
The Gunners finish 2025 five points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand against Sunderland on Thursday. Aston Villa sit third, six points behind the leaders.
