Former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been released from hospital following treatment for injuries he sustained in a road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed the development in a statement on Wednesday, noting that the boxer has been cleared by doctors to continue his recovery at home.
The New Daily Prime reported Joshua was involved in the crash on Monday when a Lexus SUV carrying him and members of his team collided with a stationary truck on the expressway. While the boxer escaped with minor injuries, the incident claimed the lives of two of his close associates — his personal trainer, Kevin Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami.
After the accident, Joshua was taken to Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos, where he received medical care until his discharge on Wednesday afternoon. Omotoso said the boxer, accompanied by his mother, later visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay respects to his late team members.
“Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu deeply appreciate the public concern and show of love and affection over this very sad and unfortunate incident,” the commissioner stated.
Meanwhile, there have been differing accounts regarding the cause of the crash. The Ogun State Police Command attributed the accident to a burst tyre, while the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said preliminary investigations pointed to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking.
Although Joshua was born in England, he maintains strong ties to Nigeria and frequently visits Sagamu, Ogun State, his ancestral home. During a visit last year, he spent time with several Nigerian celebrities and presented President Bola Tinubu with a signed boxing glove.
His most recent trip to Nigeria followed an exhibition heavyweight bout in Miami, where he knocked out Jake Paul at the Kaseya Centre.
