Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim admitted that his team fully earned their defeat after suffering a 1–0 loss to a 10-man Everton side in their Premier League showdown at Old Trafford.
Everton endured a chaotic moment early in the match when Idrissa Gueye was sent off for striking teammate Michael Keane. But despite being a man down, the visitors still found the breakthrough, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall firing in a brilliant effort in the 29th minute to secure the win.
After the match, speaking to BBC Sport, Amorim said United failed to match Everton’s drive and sharpness, even though they had a numerical advantage for more than 70 minutes.
When asked to reflect on their display, Amorim responded with a blunt assessment: “They outplayed us. We got exactly what we deserved a defeat.”
He continued: “They went down to ten men barely twenty minutes into the game. A team like ours has to take control and come away with the win in that situation.”
Amorim added that the atmosphere at Old Trafford felt ready for a big performance, but the team did not rise to the occasion:
“The fans were ready for us to show real progress, but we simply weren’t prepared for that challenge.”
Regarding the recent praise the team has been receiving, Amorim cautioned that it was premature:
“People keep talking about our improvement over the past five weeks, but I’ve been saying it consistently we’re still nowhere near the level this club demands.”
Manchester United currently sit 10th in the Premier League table, grouped alongside Tottenham, Everton, and Liverpool, but remain only three points outside the top four.
