Former Green Eagles midfielder Adebayo Gbadebo has called on the Super Eagles to remain focused and use their recent 1-1 draw against Benin Republic as a learning experience. Speaking from Bangkok, the Thailand-based coach commended the team for securing early qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals but stressed the importance of not underestimating future opponents.
The draw in Thursday’s Group D encounter at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan ensured Nigeria topped the group, guaranteeing their place in the AFCON finals in Morocco with one game to spare. Mohamed Tijani’s early goal for Benin Republic put the Super Eagles on the back foot until Victor Osimhen’s late header salvaged a point for the three-time African champions.
Gbadebo praised Head Coach Augustine Eguavoen for fostering a competitive and motivated atmosphere within the team. However, he highlighted the challenges posed by Benin Republic, including their early goal and the difficult weather conditions, as a reminder for the Super Eagles to prepare thoroughly for every opponent.
“The team underestimated the fight Benin Republic would bring,” Gbadebo noted. “This should serve as a valuable lesson to never take any team lightly, no matter their ranking.”
As the Super Eagles prepare for their final group match against Rwanda on Monday in Uyo, Gbadebo emphasized the importance of maintaining focus despite the “dead rubber” nature of the game. Rwanda, fighting to keep their AFCON hopes alive, will pose a significant challenge.
“Rwanda will come with hope and confidence, and our players need to approach the match with full preparation,” he said. “It’s not just about celebrating early qualification but proving that the Super Eagles are back as a dominant force in Africa.”
Gbadebo also highlighted the need for the team to use the Rwanda clash to build momentum for next year’s World Cup qualifiers. He expressed confidence in the squad’s depth and readiness to end the year on a high note.
“With the home crowd’s support and the players’ determination, I believe the Super Eagles can handle the pressure and give fans a strong performance,” Gbadebo concluded.
As the Super Eagles take the field in Uyo, the match will not only be a celebration of their qualification but a test of their focus and readiness for bigger challenges ahead.
