The Osun State Government has approved the participation of the state’s female football team, known as Osun Babes, in the 2025/2026 Nigeria Women Premier League (NWPL) season.
This was disclosed in a statement released on Friday in Osogbo by Kehinde Johnson, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Football Matters.
Johnson explained that the approval is in line with the government’s renewed drive to develop sports and promote the active involvement of women in competitive football.
According to him, the decision underscores the administration’s unwavering commitment to advancing women’s sports and creating opportunities for female athletes across the state.
“The Osun State government has approved for Osun Babes to feature in the 2025/2026 NPFL season. This decision reflects the government’s sustained dedication to promoting sporting excellence and empowering women to compete both nationally and internationally,” he said.
He further noted that the initiative aligns with the state’s broader vision of nurturing young female footballers and providing them with the platform to showcase their talents while representing Osun with pride.
Johnson also lauded Adeleke and his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi, for their consistent encouragement and investment in sports development within the state.
He further appreciated the Commissioner for Sports for ensuring the continuity and competitiveness of the state’s football programmes.
Johnson expressed optimism that Osun Babes would deliver an impressive performance in the forthcoming NWPL season and make the state proud through their discipline, teamwork, and determination.
Preparations for the 2025/2026 campaign are expected to commence in December as the team begins training and squad strengthening ahead of the league kickoff.
