The Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, is currently undergoing a spectacular change. Driven by huge international interest and investments, the industry is shifting from its established veterans to a new generation of dynamic, young talent. This movement is not just about making more films; it’s about changing the kinds of stories Nollywood tells and who gets to tell them on a global stage.
The financial scale of this change is immense. The industry has demonstrated substantial growth, contributing approximately ₦1.97 trillion (USD $1.4 billion) to Nigeria’s GDP as of 2023, a figure expected to climb dramatically. Also, international platforms have been critical: Netflix’s total investment in Nigeria exceeded $23.6 million by March 2023, demonstrating commitment to local content, according to Intelpoint.

This investment, though complex and recently shifting to a revenue-sharing model, has empowered a new era of filmmakers and actors to produce high-quality, internationally accessible films. The industry’s momentum continues, with Nigeria recording an 11.2% growth rate in 2024 in the Entertainment and Media sector, as reported by PwC’s Africa Entertainment and Media Outlook.

This report, therefore, features five rising Nigerian actors who are currently making amazing waves in Nollywood’s new era.
Nollywood’s New Talent Quintet
The industry’s success now hinges on a new cohort of actors whose profiles are built on skill, charisma, and digital engagement. These rising stars are defining the look and feel of modern Nigerian cinema.
Starting with, Genoveva Umeh is one of the most recognized faces of this new wave. Known for her magnetic performances, she has quickly moved from independent films to leading roles in major streaming originals. Her success embodies the platform that global streaming services offer to young African actors.

Next is Chidi Dike. Chidi Dike is swiftly gaining prominence for his versatility, particularly in romantic dramas. His talent has been recognised by local media; he was spotlighted on lists recognising handsome and upcoming talents in 2025, confirming his status as a commercially appealing young star for the industry.
Another Nollywood rising star is Martha Ehinome. Martha Ehinome has built a career noted for her ability to portray deep emotional range. Her performances have garnered critical attention, earning her a spot on the “Actors to Watch 2025” list by Top Charts Africa. She is consistently praised for her undeniable talent and strong screen presence.

Talk of handsomeness? Give it to Clinton Joshua! Clinton Joshua is another key figure in this youth movement. Recognised for his charismatic presence, he has been frequently named among the handsome and promising talents in Nollywood by various entertainment outlets in 2025. His appeal stretches across various genres, including the action thrillers gaining traction in the industry.
Lastly, Uche Montana is yet another star in the Nigerian film industry. Uche Montana has cemented her position as a breakout star through authentic and emotionally resonant portrayals. Her work, often seen in major film projects alongside other rising actors like Chidi Dike and Clinton Joshua, reflects her growing influence and prominence in the contemporary Nigerian film scene.
Redefining Storytelling
The success of these five actors is tied to a wider shift in storytelling. Veteran actor Timini Egbuson often speaks about this new direction. In interviews, he has emphasised his desire to push boundaries, take more risks, and explore untapped genres like psychological thrillers and horror. Egbuson advocates collaborating with young, “fearless creatives” who are not restricted by past industry norms. His focus on creating “something that is young, is exciting and it’s a nice, beautiful story” reflects the driving philosophy of this new generation, which seeks to move beyond old formulas, as noted in a Black Film Wire interview in early 2025.

Additionally, this new generation is also tackling the challenge of Afrocentric narratives. They are using their visibility to ensure that Nigerian films reflect the country’s rich culture, struggles, and modern complexities. Their commitment to diverse storytelling is essential for Nollywood to compete globally and ensure its output remains relevant to its massive, young, local audience while appealing to international critics and viewers.
