Yusuf Buhari, the son of Nigeria’s late former president Muhammadu Buhari, has declared his intention to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives in the 2027 general election.
The development was disclosed on Monday by former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad in a statement shared via his X account.
According to Ahmad, Yusuf Buhari is seeking to represent the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua federal constituency in Katsina State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Following wide consultations, Yusuf Buhari, the son of our late boss, President Muhammadu Buhari, has informed stakeholders of his intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat for the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua constituency under the All Progressives Congress,” Ahmad stated.
The announcement marks Yusuf Buhari’s first known move into elective politics, coming nearly two years after the death of his father, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023.
The late Buhari remained a dominant figure in Nigerian politics for decades, first as a military head of state and later as a democratically elected president. His influence continues to shape political alignments, particularly in northern Nigeria.
Yusuf Buhari’s reported ambition is expected to attract attention within the APC and beyond, especially in Katsina State, where his family holds significant political influence.
While details of his campaign strategy have yet to be made public, the decision is said to have followed consultations with key stakeholders in the constituency.
Political observers note that the move could signal the continuation of the Buhari family’s involvement in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
