The Rivers State House of Assembly has outlined the grounds for its ongoing impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, emphasising alleged repeated breaches of a peace accord brokered by President Bola Tinubu.
During Thursday’s plenary session on 8 January 2026, Majority Leader Major Jack presented a report detailing acts of gross misconduct.

He accused the governor and deputy of persistently violating resolutions from reconciliation efforts aimed at restoring political stability in the state.
“The governor and his deputy have continued to act in a manner that undermines democratic principles and accountability,” Jack stated.
He claimed the pair had shown little commitment to transparency and good governance.
Central to the allegations is the purported disregard for peace deals facilitated by President Tinubu, including agreements from meetings in December 2023 and another in 2025.

Jack argued that these breaches, occurring on multiple occasions, had left the Assembly with no choice but to initiate impeachment under constitutional provisions.
Lawmakers, now largely aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC) following defections, insist the action is necessary to uphold governance standards.
This move follows the Assembly’s recent decision to bar the governor from presenting the 2026 budget, further escalating the standoff.
An impeachment notice is set to be formally served within days, potentially deepening the impasse in the oil-rich state.
