Aminu Tambuwal, former governor of Sokoto State and a prominent figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics, has firmly dismissed assertions that the Alliance for Democracy and Change (ADC) is a “Northern agenda.”
Speaking on Channels Television yesterday, Tambuwal emphasised the coalition’s national character, presenting it as a broad-based alliance aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
His remarks came amid growing speculation about opposition realignments following the 2023 polls, where Labour Party’s Peter Obi emerged as a strong contender.

Tambuwal, now representing Sokoto South in the National Assembly, challenged critics questioning the coalition’s inclusivity.
“Is Peter Obi from Northern Nigeria? Is Aregbesola not from Osun State? What are you telling me? Are they not all part of the coalition?” he asked rhetorically, referencing Obi’s southeastern roots and Rauf Aregbesola, the former Osun governor and current Minister of Interior, to underscore the group’s diverse regional representation.
Tambuwal’s intervention highlighted tensions within Nigeria’s polarised political landscape, where regional loyalties often fuel debates over power-sharing.
The ADC, a relatively new opposition platform, has been touted by Tambuwal and his allies as a vehicle for uniting anti-APC forces ahead of the May 29, 2027, presidential inauguration.
He advocated a peaceful, constitutional pathway to regime change, warning against any attempts to entrench the status quo.
In a pointed critique of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Tambuwal alleged widespread failures in addressing Nigerians’ core expectations.
“The government has not met the yearnings of the people in terms of security, economy, and infrastructure,” he stated, pointing to escalating inflation, unemployment, and insecurity as evdence of governance deficits.
“It is not cast in stone that he may not lose in 2027. Every effort being made to make it seem as if Bola Tinubu cannot be defeated is rubbish,” Tambuwal declared, signalling confidence in the opposition’s electoral prospects.

However, APC spokespersons have yet to respond, though party insiders dismiss the coalition as fragmented and ineffective.
The senator urged citizens to engage actively in the democratic process, affirming that “change through the ballot box remains the only legitimate path.
