The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled its former National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, alongside several senior officials, over allegations of misconduct, financial misappropriation, and abuse of office.
The decision was announced in Abuja on Thursday following a meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), which ratified the findings of its Disciplinary Committee and a subsequent White Paper that reviewed the allegations against the affected officers.
Speaking at a press briefing at the party’s National Secretariat, the National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Rufus Aiyenigba, said the expulsion marked the conclusion of an extensive internal investigation.
“The move followed the adoption of the report of the Disciplinary Committee and a subsequent White Paper which reviewed the findings and recommendations on the allegations brought against the affected officers,” Aiyenigba explained.
He recalled that the NWC had earlier suspended Gabam, the National Youth Leader, Mr. Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu, and the National Auditor, Mr. Clarkson Nnadi, on 24 June 2025, after a prima facie case of misconduct, financial impropriety, and gross abuse of office was established.
To ensure due process, the party constituted an independent Disciplinary Committee on 4 July 2025, which conducted a two-week investigation and submitted its report on 18 July 2025. The NWC later reviewed and adopted the White Paper on 15 August 2025, paving the way for Thursday’s decision.
Those affected by the expulsion include Gabam, Uchechukwu, and several others accused of disloyalty and unlawful entry into the party’s national secretariat on 28 July 2025. The National Auditor, Mr. Nnadi, was relieved of his duties following his voluntary resignation.
Aiyenigba disclosed that the expelled members were apprehended by security operatives while allegedly in possession of sensitive documents and valuables removed from the secretariat, and are currently facing criminal prosecution.
He stated that the disciplinary measures were necessary to restore integrity, discipline, and internal order within the SDP.
“The actions take immediate effect from Thursday, 23 October 2025,” Aiyenigba said, adding that the decision was unanimously endorsed by the NWC.
He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and constitutional order in its operations.
