The Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Mr Benibo Anabraba, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking another major political development in the state’s evolving political landscape.
Anabraba’s resignation was conveyed in a letter dated January 5, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Ward 1, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State. In the letter, the state government official described his decision to quit the party as a personal one.
“I write to formally inform you of my decision to resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This decision is personal,” the letter stated.
Anabraba, who has been a prominent figure within the PDP in Rivers State, also expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunities and political exposure he gained during his time as a member. He noted that his experience within the PDP contributed significantly to his political growth.
“I wish to sincerely appreciate the party for the political leverage gained from the PDP during the period of my membership,” he added.
While the Secretary to the State Government did not disclose his next political destination in the resignation letter, reliable political sources indicate that he may be planning to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The development has further fuelled speculation about possible realignments among top political office holders in Rivers State.
Anabraba’s resignation is coming amid heightened political tensions and shifting loyalties in the state, particularly as political actors position themselves ahead of future elections. His exit from the PDP is expected to have implications for the party’s structure in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area and possibly at the state level.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Rivers State PDP leadership nor the state government has issued an official response to the resignation.
More details are expected to emerge as events unfold.
