The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Northern Support Group has officially declared its unwavering support for former President Goodluck Jonathan to emerge as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections. The endorsement was made in a communiqué released following the group’s 8th meeting held in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, spanning Wednesday and Thursday.
According to the communiqué, jointly signed by the group’s Northern Coordinator, Yusuf Abubakar, and North-West Zonal Secretary, Adamu Narayi, Jonathan remains “the only man capable of redeeming the PDP and restoring Nigeria’s unity.”
The coalition, made up of loyalists and support groups from all 19 northern states, pledged to launch an aggressive and well-coordinated media campaign—especially across the North—to galvanise public support for Jonathan and strengthen the PDP’s renewed agenda ahead of the 2027 polls.
Abubakar emphasised the group’s belief in the former president’s credibility and capacity, describing him as a “tested leader and a symbol of peace and stability.”
“Dr Jonathan has never abandoned the PDP. He peacefully handed over power in 2015 and continues to stand for unity, progress, and stability. He is the man to restore hope,” Abubakar stated.

Dismissing concerns over Jonathan’s eligibility to contest again, the group insisted that the issue has already been settled and cannot be used as a tool by the opposition to discredit his candidacy.
The group also expressed strong support for the leadership of the PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum, applauding his ongoing reconciliation efforts aimed at uniting party factions and restoring internal stability.
However, it raised concerns over alleged sabotage from within the party, accusing unnamed leaders and elders of collaborating with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) while masquerading as PDP loyalists.
“Certain elements within the National Working Committee (NWC), driven by selfish interests, are working to derail the party’s progress,” the communiqué alleged. The group urged Damagum to take disciplinary action against individuals engaging in anti-party activities.
Reaffirming grassroots support for the PDP across the northern region, the group urged all members to prioritise unity over personal ambition.
“Our loyalty is to the PDP, not to individuals. Together, we will restore the party’s lost glory,” the statement concluded.
This endorsement comes amid internal divisions within the PDP regarding Jonathan’s presumed interest in returning to the political stage in 2027. Some party factions are advocating for alternative candidates from other regions, sparking renewed debate over zoning and strategic positioning.
