The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to explain allegations that some of its senior officials received land and cash gifts from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

In a statement on Monday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said the reports were “disturbing and worrisome,” and that they raise questions about the independence of the electoral body.
The party said media reports had linked the gifts to senior officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, including a claim that a supervising national commissioner for the FCT, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, admitted receiving land.

According to the PDP, the development suggests a possible “land-for-favour” arrangement aimed at influencing key institutions ahead of elections.
The statement read, “It is curious that these land gifts are given to officials in agencies critical to elections,”
It noted that workers in other sectors such as health, education and security have not received similar benefits.
The party called on the INEC Chairman to publicly address the allegations, including claims that he may also be a beneficiary.
The development reflects broader trends in APC political updates across Nigeria.
Ememobong said, “These stories, at a time like this, deepen the erosion of public trust in an electoral umpire with a legacy of stained credibility.”
He urged the Commission to act quickly and clarify the situation, and emphasised that transparency is vital to maintaining confidence in the electoral process.
He added, “The Commission must strive to be above board and ensure that transparency and impartiality are obvious in both its words and actions.”
The PDP insisted that Nigerians deserve a clear explanation, with a warning that silence could further damage trust in the country’s election system.
