The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied reports that it is imposing a mandatory ₦10,000 levy on its members to fund party operations, describing such claims as a “misleading distortion” of its financial strategy.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, clarified that the ₦10,000 figure was used as a purely illustrative example of mass support and not as a directive or compulsory payment.
The rebuttal follows a viral report by The Observer Times with the headline: “PDP Calls on Members to Contribute N10,000 Each in Bid to Fund Party Activities.”

Ememobong acknowledged that the body of the news report accurately quoted an interview but slammed the headline as sensationalist clickbait that misrepresented the party’s actual policy.
“The headline is as false as it is misleading,” Ememobong stated. “There is no fixed amount, no compulsory payment, and no obligation imposed on any member of the PDP.”
He explained that in the face of recent high-profile defections by some governors, the party’s leadership has decided to pivot away from reliance on wealthy patrons and return to its original 1998 grassroots funding model.
Ememobong argued that when ordinary citizens voluntarily fund a political cause—even with small amounts—it gives them a more powerful voice in governance.
During the controversial interview, the PDP spokesperson used a hypothetical scenario to demonstrate the power of the masses.
He said if 60 million Nigerians contributed ₦10,000 each, it would generate a massive fund for political activities.
Ememobong emphasised that members are encouraged to give whatever they can afford, with no minimum or maximum requirement.

He noted that this voluntary model is already yielding results in states like Plateau and Akwa Ibom, where grassroots supporters are reportedly mobilising resources to sustain party structures.
Ememobong urged the public to disregard the sensationalised reports and continue supporting the party through “appropriate and convenient” voluntary means as it prepares for future electoral challenges.
