The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the ongoing internal crisis within the party as self-inflicted, while confirming that preparations for its forthcoming national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, remain on course.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday during the presentation of the BoT Reconciliation Committee’s report, BoT Chairman and former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, maintained that the PDP remains united and determined to reposition itself ahead of future elections.
“It is absolutely practicable for us to go to the convention,” Wabara said. “All organs of the party — the Governors’ Forum, the National Working Committee, and the Board of Trustees — have agreed that we will proceed. Our last communiqué also mentioned it.”
However, he added that the party would comply with any lawful court order that could affect the schedule of the convention.
“If we are stopped by the courts, we are a law-abiding party. We will obey the law — or obey the last order, as the case may be,” he noted.
Responding to suggestions that the BoT’s intervention came too late, Wabara dismissed the criticism, arguing that the PDP’s challenges stemmed largely from internal political manoeuvring.
“There is actually no crisis. All these problems we have in the PDP are self-inflicted. In politics, it’s all about interests. Some people want the party dead now so they can resurrect it in 2031 for their own purposes,” he declared.
He pledged the BoT’s full commitment to ensuring the PDP’s stability, unity, and survival, emphasising that decisions taken by the board would be guided solely by the party’s long-term interests.
The Chairman of the BoT Reconciliation Committee, Ambassador Hassan Adamu, said the panel, inaugurated on 5 November 2025, immediately began consultations with key stakeholders to pave the way for a smooth and credible convention.
Committee Secretary and former Chief of Staff to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Mike Oghiadomhe, revealed that the panel met with major figures including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, members of the Governors’ Forum, the National Working Committee, and suspended party officers.
“We believe that we have addressed all the key issues troubling our party. Our recommendations provide a clear roadmap for sustainable and effective party administration at this critical time,” Oghiadomhe said.
Six copies of the report, including annexures and supporting documents, were submitted to the BoT for consideration.
The PDP convention faces uncertainty amid divisions between the Damagum-led National Working Committee and a rival faction backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Despite this, party leaders insist the convention will go ahead as planned.
