Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO) has stepped down from his position as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) as he intensifies his preparations for the 2026 governorship race in Osun State.
His resignation was confirmed in a statement released by Adebayo Adedeji, Coordinator of the AMBO Media Fronts.
In the statement, Oyebamiji expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for granting him the opportunity to serve the nation and to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, whose endorsement secured his appointment in October 2023.
He acknowledged the steadfast support of both leaders throughout his two-year tenure, describing his service at NIWA as a valuable opportunity to contribute to national development.
“It has been an honour to serve the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to work under leaders who believe in capacity, integrity and delivery,” he noted.
The statement highlighted that Oyebamiji’s nearly four decades of experience across the public and private sectors proved instrumental in repositioning NIWA for greater efficiency. Among his recorded achievements were significant improvements in safety standards on Nigeria’s inland waterways.
According to the statement, fatalities and accidents reduced by over 70 per cent during his stewardship, owing to strengthened enforcement, enhanced safety campaigns and wider stakeholder engagement.
Staff welfare within the agency also saw notable improvements, with several reforms reportedly earning commendation from maritime industry observers.
With the Osun 2026 governorship election drawing closer, Oyebamiji reaffirmed his commitment to delivering purposeful leadership for the state. He emphasised that his ambition is rooted in service, guided by faith and strengthened by years of administrative experience.
“For the 2026 governorship contest, AMBO places his trust in God Almighty, in the leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to nominate him as the party’s flag-bearer, and ultimately in the good people of Osun State to support his aspiration to serve them with integrity, competence and dedication,” the statement read.
His resignation formally positions him among the frontline aspirants seeking the APC ticket as the race for the Osun governorship intensifies.
