Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and prominent chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chief John Oyegun, has issued a stark warning that Nigeria’s very existence is under threat, calling for urgent collective action to rescue the nation.
Oyegun made the declaration on Thursday in Benin City during the official joining of veteran journalist, media entrepreneur, a former presidential candidate Chief Dele Momodu to to the ADC.
The event, held at the party’s state secretariat, underscored growing momentum within the opposition as it positions itself as a credible alternative ahead of future elections.

Describing the moment as part of a “modern existential struggle,” Oyegun stressed the critical importance of the coming months.
“Today, we are sitting side by side again in a modern existential struggle because the life of this country depends on what you sitting there are going to do in the next few months. It isn’t a campaign yet; we are warming up,” he said.

He praised Momodu’s decision to join, highlighting his longstanding integrity and role as a media watchdog. “We are gathering strength, and a fantastic man of integrity and principle, like Dele Momodu, is joining us. For him to be joining us is not, you know, he’s not one of those politicians. He’s not a convert; he has always been there. In his capacity as a media man, he was one of those who policed the polity and policed politicians. Today he has decided enough is enough; he had better join in this struggle personally.”
Oyegun referenced the long-suffering burden borne by Nigerians since independence, invoking the adage “monkey work, monkey chop” to criticise exploitation.
“The people of this country have carried a burden since independence… The very existence of this country is becoming threatened.”
He positioned the ADC as a genuine movement dedicated to addressing the plight of ordinary citizens. “ADC is a movement, a movement that wants to ensure and assure that the people of this country, the long-suffering people of this country, finally get listened to… Their basic needs become the prime mission of any government in this country because they own this country. They own the wealth of this country.”
