A prominent figure in the Labour Party (LP), Abayomi Arabambi, has advised Nigerians against trusting presidential hopeful Peter Obi’s recent pledge to serve only a single four-year term if elected in 2027.
Arabambi, who spoke on Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief”, pointed to Obi’s past actions.
He pointed at the defection of the former governor of Anambra State from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) after being elected governor on that platform, as a reason for skepticism.

Arabambi, who serves as a factional national publicity secretary for the LP, argued that Obi’s promise of a one-term presidency is not credible, given his track record of leaving political parties.
“We are not going to trust him,” Arabambi said, reminding viewers that Obi had once promised to remain with APGA but later defected.
Obi, the LP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has recently been reiterating his commitment to a single term.
In a recent social media post, the 64-year-old reaffirmed his pledge to serve just a single four-year term.
He described it as a solemn promise driven by his belief that effective and transparent leadership does not demand a lifetime in office.
However, Arabambi contended that Obi’s popularity in the last election was not a result of his political principles but rather a reflection of widespread public dissatisfaction with the previous administration and the main opposition party.
He also alleged that Obi did not financially support the LP, claiming instead that he was a beneficiary of the party’s platform.
“No kobo of Peter Obi entered the party,” Arabambi said, emphasising his belief that the party was instrumental in Obi’s rise, and not the other way around.

Conversely, renowned author Chimamanda Adichie expressed her unwavering support for Obi.
She said the support was because she believed in Obi’s selfless leadership and commitment to Nigeria.
In a separate interview on Channels Television’s “Amazing Africans”, Adichie argued that Obi is not driven by desperation for power.

“He doesn’t need to be president,” she stated, adding that his motivation comes from a genuine concern for the country.
She praised Obi for his humility and accountability, noting that he does not expect to be thanked for doing his job as a leader, but rather sees it as his duty to the people.
