Veteran Nollywood actor and former spokesperson of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council, Kenneth Okonkwo, has issued a bold statement amid rising political tensions in Nigeria.
Speaking on recent threats of imposing a state of emergency in certain states, Okonkwo declared that he would resist any such move if he were serving as a governor.
“If I am a Governor, and Tinubu threatens me with a state of emergency in my state as the elected chief executive, I will never leave that Government House. It’s either they give me liberty or death,” Okonkwo stated.
The comment comes amidst growing speculation surrounding the Federal Government’s handling of dissenting state administrations and fears that President Bola Tinubu’s government might resort to emergency powers in politically tense regions.
Okonkwo’s remark has sparked significant reactions on social media, with supporters hailing his defiance as a stand for democratic principles, while critics have called it incendiary and unnecessarily confrontational.
Analysts suggest the statement reflects a deepening mistrust between the opposition and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly as the country grapples with economic challenges and rising insecurity.
There has been no official response from the Presidency at the time of publication.
