The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has not taken any decision on zoning its governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections, according to the state chairman, Sunday Fagbemi.
Fagbemi made the clarification during a radio programme monitored in Ilorin on Friday night, amid growing agitation from stakeholders in the Kwara North Senatorial District for power rotation to the zone.
He explained that discussions on zoning had not commenced within the state chapter and that such a decision would ultimately rest with the party’s national leadership.
“If there will be any zoning, the national executive of the party will give the directive. But as of now, nothing of such is on the offing. We have not even discussed it because we don’t have the schedule decided yet. Anyone who has interest to vie for any position has the right to do so,” Fagbemi stated.
He further emphasised that even if the Kwara APC reaches a consensus on zoning, it would still require ratification from the national secretariat.
“Even if we decide in Kwara that this is what we want, it is still subject to approval from the national secretariat,” he said.
The comments come as pressure mounts from political groups and opinion leaders in Kwara North, who argue that the region deserves a chance to produce the next governor, having not held the position since the return of democracy in 1999.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who assumed office in 2019, is currently serving his second and final term, which will end in 2027. With his tenure winding down, political activities and succession discussions are expected to intensify in the coming months as the state prepares for the next general elections.
