The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Abdulsalam Gwarzo, has reportedly stepped down from office, according to a statement released by the Kwankwasiyya Movement, although the state government has yet to officially confirm the development.
In the statement signed by its spokesperson, Habibu Sale Mohammed, the political group stated that the decision followed careful consideration and was taken in the interest of maintaining stability in the state’s governance.
The statement noted that prevailing circumstances had made it increasingly difficult for the deputy governor to effectively discharge the full scope of his responsibilities. “This decision, though difficult, has been taken in the overall interest of the people and the stability of governance in Kano State,” it read.
The reported resignation comes in the wake of allegations levelled against Gwarzo by the Kano State House of Assembly, although specific details of the accusations were not outlined in the statement.
Despite the development, the Kwankwasiyya Movement emphasised that the deputy governor’s decision to step aside should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt. “The Deputy Governor maintains his innocence and firmly believes that his records in office and public service remain a testament to his integrity and commitment to the people,” the statement added.
The group further revealed that Gwarzo intends to redirect his efforts towards strengthening the Kwankwasiyya Movement, with a focus on restructuring and strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Government has not issued any official confirmation or response regarding the reported resignation, leaving uncertainty over the political situation in the state.
Political observers note that if confirmed, the development could have significant implications for governance and political alignments in Kano State, particularly as parties and movements intensify preparations for the next electoral cycle.
