President Bola Tinubu’s Senior Special Assistant on Print Media, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, has dismissed any suggestion that former President Goodluck Jonathan poses a political threat, saying there is no cause for concern even if Jonathan chooses to return to active politics.
Speaking in an interview in Kano, Abdulaziz said Jonathan’s past electoral defeat as a sitting president in 2015 already demonstrated his political limits.
“Somebody who was defeated while he was a sitting president, there is nothing he can do now. Maybe he can come and try his luck. It is the beauty of democracy. Anybody can decide to contest,” he said.
He insisted that President Tinubu is not concerned about the possibility of Jonathan re-entering the political arena.
“But Jonathan is not a threat at all. No one is scared of him. Certainly not the President,” he added.
Abdulaziz suggested that Jonathan may be under pressure from political actors looking to mislead him into contesting again, potentially damaging his legacy.
“Personally, I will say that he should not listen to people who want to destroy him or who want to demystify him by urging him on to a contest that is a no-contest in reality — because I don’t see where Jonathan will make an in-road or get any substantial vote in that election,” he said.
There has been speculation in recent weeks about a possible political comeback by Jonathan ahead of the 2027 elections, but no official statement has been made by the former president.
