Former President Goodluck Jonathan has refuted claims that he has abandoned ambitions to contest the 2027 Nigerian presidential election, labelling such reports as false and misleading.
His cousin, Azibaola Robert, clarified on his verified Facebook page that Jonathan has not ruled out a potential run, dismissing speculations attributed to a non-existent aide.
“The story is completely false. Former President Jonathan never said he would not contest in 2027,” Robert stated, adding that while Jonathan has not formally declared his candidacy, he remains open to the possibility.

Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, remains a significant figure in national politics, fueling speculation about a possible comeback.
Robert emphasised that JonathanJonathan would not succumb to pressures discouraging his participation, suggesting that such calls stem from selfish motives.
However, no timeline was provided for when Jonathan might announce his decision.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is actively weighing its options for the 2027 elections.
Bauchi State Governor and PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman, Bala Mohammed, revealed that the party is considering Jonathan and former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi as potential standard-bearers.
Speaking on a national television programme, Mohammed described Jonathan as “one of the most celebrated politicians today” despite past political challenges.
He noted that Jonathan would be a strong contender if he expressed interest.
Moh Mohammed also hinted at ongoing discussions with Obi, calling him a “brother” and a celebrated politician who could be welcomed back to the PDP.
“If he decides to come to a better platform, he will be given the opportunity,” Mohammed said. Other southern politicians, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, were also mentioned as potential candidates.

Reflecting on the PDP’s 2023 election loss, Mohammed stressed the need for a southern Christian presidential candidate paired with a northern Muslim running mate to ensure national balance.
As the PDP strategises, Jonathan’s silence and the party’s outreach to key figures continue to stir political anticipation ahead of 2027.
