The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised a red flag over a fraudulent “timetable and schedule of activities” for the 2027 general election currently making the rounds on social media.
The Commission in a statement signed by Adedayo Oketola, Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman labeled the viral documents as “false and misleading”.
INEC stated that no such schedule has been authorized or released to the public.

INEC clarified that its operations are strictly governed by the Electoral Act, 2022.
Specifically, Section 28(1) of the Act mandates the Commission to publish the official Notice of Election no later than 360 days before the appointed date of a general election.
Given that the next general elections are slated for 2027, any timetable circulating in early 2026 falls well outside this mandatory statutory window.
INEC emphasised that any schedule released prematurely cannot be considered an official product of the Commission.
The Commission urged Nigerians and media organizations to verify all election-related news through INEC’s established and verified channels.
This warning comes amid a rise in premature political activities and disinformation campaigns ahead of the next major polls.
INEC clarified that only information published on its official website and verified social media handles should be relied upon for authentic updates.
The Commission stressed that its official election timetable would be released strictly in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
INEC also urged members of the public to disregard any unofficial schedules, warning that such information could cause confusion or be used for political manipulation.

While the 2027 timetable is still a year away from legal publication, INEC’s official portal confirms that several off-cycle governorship elections are scheduled for 2026, including the Ekiti and Osun State Governorship polls.
The Commission remains focused on these immediate constitutional responsibilities while preparing the groundwork for the 2027 general cycle.
