An aide to Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, Darlington Orji, has declared that the ongoing impeachment move against the governor will not succeed, insisting that the allegations levelled against his principal lack merit.
Orji asserted during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, arguing that there was no truth to the claims of misconduct and financial misappropriation raised by the Rivers State House of Assembly against Governor Fubara.
According to him, the impeachment process is fundamentally flawed and would ultimately collapse, as similar attempts in the past have been dismissed by courts for failing to follow due process.
“I can tell you for free that this process will not scale through because there is no truth in it. And as you said, it is only they that can interpret when there is misappropriation or gross misconduct,” Orji said.
He added that while the House of Assembly is constitutionally empowered to raise allegations, it must also strictly adhere to the laid-down procedures, noting that courts across the country have nullified several impeachment processes on procedural grounds.
“Yes, because you will also agree with me that so many courts in the land have also ignored so many impeachment processes because they didn’t follow the procedure,” he said.
Orji, who noted that he is not an Assembly member, said he was confident the impeachment bid would be halted based on his interactions with lawmakers. He claimed that many House members were uncomfortable with the process and did not fully support the move.
“I’m not a member of the House, but I can tell you because I’m on the ground. We reached out to so many of them. Many of them are my friends, and we have always worked together before now,” he said.
According to Orji, dissatisfaction among lawmakers would soon bring the process to an end.
“This process, they are not happy with what they are doing. And I’m sure that before the end of the day and within the upper week, this process will be completely put to rest,” he added.
The impeachment move against Governor Fubara has heightened political tension in Rivers State, with his supporters maintaining that the process is politically motivated. At the same time, the House of Assembly has yet to respond to the aide’s claims publicly.
