Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has denied accusations of being desperate for power.
He stated that his political actions are not driven by personal ambition.
Obi, in a statement posted on his X page on Tuesday, said that a true commitment to service can bring about significant change in a single four-year term, and that his proposal for a one-term presidency is a reflection of this conviction.

The 64-year-old’s remarks come as his pledge to serve for a single term if elected in 2027 continues to generate debate.
He expressed bewilderment at the agitation the proposal has caused, suggesting it implies a lack of faith in a leader’s ability to be effective in 48 months.
The presidential hopeful also outlined what he believes are the signs of desperation in politics, which he says are not present in his own conduct.
He listed traits such as aggressive rhetoric, being overly defensive to criticism, making unrealistic promises, resorting to personal attacks, and frequently changing positions to suit political needs.
Obi instead presented his motivation as a “deep, commitment to see Nigeria work.”
He emphasised that if a sincere, accountable four-year term is the sacrifice required, he is willing to make it.
Obi also challenged anyone to investigate his political history, asserting that he has never been involved in thuggery, ballot box snatching, or any form of electoral malpractice.
He further stated that those who have contested against him have never been denied their rights or falsely accused.
Within the four-year timeframe, Obi believes a dedicated leader can effectively tackle corruption, redirect resources to crucial sectors like education and healthcare, and ensure the rule of law is upheld.
He specifically mentioned that funds used for what he called “unnecessary expenses”, such as new presidential jets, could be better utilised for the benefit of the populace.

“If given the mandate, for just one term, I will dedicate every moment to building a Nigeria that works for all.”
