Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and empowerment for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
Speaking at the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities event held at the Jibowu Hall, Government House Grounds, Ado Ekiti, on Tuesday, the governor described PWDs as valuable assets capable of reshaping their communities.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Habibat Adubiaro, Governor Oyebanji emphasised the potential of PWDs to actively contribute to societal development.
He also distributed over 200 assistive devices, including wheelchairs and white canes, to support their daily activities.
The governor urged PWDs to embrace their roles as community leaders, challenging stereotypes, advocating for their rights, and fostering collaboration for a more inclusive society. He stated:
“You are not burdens; you are assets. By engaging proactively, you enhance your own lives and enrich the lives of those around you. Your voices matter, and your actions can transform perceptions. Every time you showcase your skills, intelligence, and resilience, you shape how others see you and, by extension, all people with disabilities.”
Oyebanji also reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to creating a supportive environment through policies promoting inclusion, accessibility, and equal opportunities for all residents of Ekiti State.
Speaking, Adetoun Agboola, Special Adviser on Special Education and Social Inclusion, lauded the governor’s strides in supporting the PWD community.

She highlighted several government initiatives, including skills training, improved accessibility, and investment in education and human capital development.
The Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) in Ekiti State, Sesan Aina, commended the administration for welfare programs such as scholarship payments for students with disabilities, the renovation of special schools, and the establishment of a therapy center for children with disabilities.
The event featured drama sketches, cultural dances, and performances by students from the state’s special schools. Awards were also presented to individuals and institutions championing the rights and welfare of PWDs.
The occasion drew a diverse audience, including members of the state executive council, traditional rulers, council chairmen, and members of the general public, all united in celebrating the resilience and contributions of the PWD community.
Governor Oyebanji encouraged PWDs to remain steadfast in pursuing their dreams and contributing meaningfully to the state’s development, aligning with this year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”
