Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo has suspended all market unions and associations in the state, with immediate effect.
The governor in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua suspended the unions over what he described as disturbing activities that have negatively impacted the local economy.
The suspension followed reports of price manipulation and market disruption by union executives.
According to the governor, the leadership of the unions has been obstructing farmers from selling directly to consumers, while also arbitrarily setting prices for staple foods, leading to unaffordable food prices for the average citizen.
Governor Okpebholo condemned the actions, calling them extortionist and detrimental to the welfare of low-income earners in the state.
“Their actions have led to an astronomical rise in food prices, making life unbearable for the common Edo man,” said Governor Okpebholo.

The governor stressed that while the government recognises the vital role of market traders in the state’s economy, it will not tolerate the exploitation of the public under the guise of market union activities.
To enforce the suspension, the governor has directed security agencies to arrest any union leaders who continue to flout the order.
The governor made it clear that anyone found violating this directive will be held accountable.
Governor Okpebholo said the move was part of broader efforts to restore order and protect the interests of everyday citizens in the face of rising living costs.
