In a significant political shift, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Lagos State, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The announcement, made at a vibrant event in Alimosho Local Government Area yesterday, marks a pivotal moment in consolidating opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Rhodes-Vivour, widely seen as a frontrunner for Lagos’ governorship, is poised to reshape the state’s political landscape.
Speaking at the declaration ceremony, Rhodes-Vivour emphasized the need for a united opposition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“This coalition is about rescuing Nigeria. Since the 2023 elections, I’ve stressed that a divided opposition cannot succeed in 2027.
We must unite through a robust coalition to deliver real change,” he said, expressing optimism about the ADC’s vision for a “global Lagos” that offers opportunities for all.
The event, attended by party leaders, supporters, and political stakeholders, was not without challenges.
Gbadebo reported police interference, with the original venue at Lion Field in Alimosho sealed off despite prior approvals.
He condemned the action as “an attack on democracy” and accused the APC of using state institutions to suppress opposition voices.
The event was relocated within Alimosho, ensuring its success.
Lagos ADC Chairman George Ashiru hailed Rhodes-Vivour’s defection as a milestone, describing it as “the affirmation of a movement that shook Lagos in 2023.”
He highlighted the coalition’s roots, formed two years ago, to challenge APC dominance.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, represented by Professor Ola Olateju, praised the ADC as a “people-driven movement” promoting inclusivity across ethnic, religious, and class lines.
Rhodes-Vivour’s move has energized supporters, with many viewing him as the next governor of Lagos.
His defection strengthens the ADC’s coalition, which includes prominent opposition figures like Atiku and Peter Obi, signaling a formidable challenge to the APC in 2027.
