Former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-Anambra State governor, Mr. Peter Obi, has reiterated his commitment to serve only one term if elected president, stating that four years is sufficient to transform Nigeria through sincere and purposeful leadership.
Obi made the statement on Tuesday via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, expressing surprise at the widespread debate sparked by his one-term pledge. He argued that a focused and principled leader can deliver meaningful change within a single term.
“I still find it baffling that my decision to do a term of four years, if given the mandate to rule this country, is generating so much agitation, By this feeling, we are doubting the fact that a sincere leader can achieve much in 48 months,” Obi wrote.
He stressed that his ambition has never been about power for its own sake, but about restoring Nigeria’s dignity and functionality. “I have never been desperate in the pursuit of power, or anything else, for that matter,” he stated, warning against traits commonly associated with desperate politicians, such as aggressive rhetoric, unrealistic promises, and character attacks.
Obi also challenged anyone to investigate his political history, maintaining that he has never engaged in electoral malpractice or political violence.
“Throughout my political journey, I have never been involved in thuggery, the snatching of ballot boxes, or any form of electoral malpractice. I challenge anyone: conduct your investigations. You will find no stains of rigging or violence associated with my name.”

He went on to outline what could be achieved within a four-year presidency, including confronting corruption, enforcing the rule of law, and prioritising sectors like education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
“For instance, the trillions used to acquire new presidential jets and other unnecessary expenses at this time could have been channelled into education, healthcare, or infrastructure,” he added.
Obi concluded by saying that he believes a peaceful, civil, and people-focused approach to leadership can usher in lasting change, assuring Nigerians that if given the opportunity, he would serve with integrity, focus, and urgency.
