Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has clarified that his political divergence from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar stems solely from differences in party alignment, dismissing speculation of a personal rift.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television, Fintiri emphasised that although they now belong to different political platforms, he maintains a cordial relationship with the former vice president.
“There is no strained communication with the former VP as a result of political differences,” the governor stated. “I still have; there is nothing that has gone bad. It is just that everybody has taken their political ways. I am today in APC, they are in another party.”
Fintiri noted that political disagreements should not be misconstrued as personal animosity, stressing that mature democracies allow room for ideological differences without damaging long-standing relationships. He added that individuals genuinely committed to Nigeria’s development must continue to see one another as partners in nation-building, regardless of party affiliation.
The governor further explained that his current political position is guided by his support for a southern candidacy, suggesting that his alignment reflects broader considerations about equity and national balance.
Observers say the clarification comes amid heightened political realignments across the country, with key figures redefining alliances ahead of forthcoming electoral contests. Fintiri’s remarks appear aimed at dispelling rumours of a breakdown in communication between the two prominent northern politicians.
While both men have played significant roles in Nigeria’s political landscape over the years, Fintiri maintained that their personal rapport remains intact despite pursuing different political paths.
