Former Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has dismissed claims that he held a closed-door meeting with former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, at his Abuja residence.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Media Office Head, Ahmad Sajoh, Fayemi described the circulating reports as false and urged the public to disregard them. The claims, which gained traction on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, were accompanied by an old video showing Fayemi greeting Kwankwaso at his residence.
According to the statement, Fayemi has met Kwankwaso only once in the past year, and that meeting occurred at the public book launch of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN. “At no time has Dr Fayemi held, or is he holding, any closed-door political meeting with Senator Kwankwaso as suggested by the post,” the statement emphasised.
Fayemi acknowledged that he and Kwankwaso have maintained a personal friendship since their respective tenures as governors. However, he stressed that the relationship is non-partisan, “based on mutual respect and a shared commitment to the progress of Nigeria, rather than on any political alignment.”
The former governor also cautioned against attempts by political actors to attach partisan interpretations to private relationships, noting that many of his friends and associates either do not participate in partisan politics or belong to different political parties. The statement highlighted that Fayemi’s network “spans the entire spectrum of Nigeria’s political terrain.”
Reaffirming his commitment to national unity and principled engagement, Fayemi called for responsible public discourse and warned against the spread of misinformation aimed at creating political narratives where none exist.
