Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has urged the Nigerian government to prioritise greater investment in the sports sector.
In a statement posted on his X page, the 63-year-old emphasised that sports serve not only as a powerful unifying force in Nigeria but also as a significant avenue for youth employment and economic growth.

Obi made this call while congratulating Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman, who was crowned African Footballer of the Year 2024, and Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, honoured as the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year 2024 at the prestigious Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards.
The former governor of Anambra State also highlighted Nigeria’s remarkable presence on the continental stage, as the women’s national team, the Super Falcons, clinched the Women’s National Team of the Year award at the same event.



“I sincerely congratulate our very dear sportsmen and women who, through these awards, have written their names in gold and brought honor to our nation. Thank you for your hard work, efforts, skills, and excellence which brought you thus far.

“For a youthful population like ours, sports remains a very important sector and we must give it the adequate attention it deserves. A New Nigeria remains POssible”, Obi said.
