Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State yesterday raised concerns about the influx of bandits fleeing military operations in the North-West into Oyo State.
The governor who spoke at the 2025 annual inter-faith service for workers at the Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, reassured residents of his administration’s resolve to root out the criminal elements.
He said the challenges of 2024 regarding safety and security were immense, noting that the state faced fire outbreaks, armed robberies, and kidnappings.
The governor maintained that in 2025, his administration is committed to intensifying its efforts to tackle these issues head-on.
Makinde attributed the migration of bandits to the ongoing military campaigns in the North-West, which include aerial bombardments of their hideouts.
These operations, he noted, had forced the criminals to seek refuge in other states, including Oyo.
The governor shared a personal encounter to illustrate the gravity of the situation. “While attending my birthday retreat in Fashola area, bandits had set up camp less than two kilometers away. This highlights the urgent need for action,” he said.
Makinde commended the state’s security operatives for their dedication and urged traditional rulers and residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

“To our traditional rulers and residents, this is no joke. If you notice any suspicious movements, report them immediately. Oyo State will not become a haven for bandits. I will not rest until every part of this state is secure,” he declared.
Addressing the December tragedy at Islamic High School, Bashorun, where 35 children lost their lives in a stampede, Makinde vowed to ensure justice for the victims.
“Some have mentioned that similar incidents in other states, like Anambra and the FCT, ended without prosecutions. My response is clear—Oyo State is different. Justice will be served here,” he stated.
Makinde clarified his stance on bail, emphasizing that the judicial process must be followed. “I am not against bail pending trial. However, suspects must face the full weight of the law. While other states may overlook the rule of law, Oyo State will uphold it,” he added.
On workers’ welfare, Makinde assured that negotiations for pensioners’ minimum wage and arrears would be finalized soon.
The state’s Head of Service, Olubunmi Oni, praised Makinde for his dedication to worker-friendly policies and urged civil servants to remain diligent.
Additionally, goodwill messages from Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin (represented by Deputy Speaker Abiodun Fadeyi), NLC Chairman Comrade Kayode Martins, and TUC Chairman Comrade Bosun Olabiyi commended Makinde’s commitment to workers and encouraged him to sustain his efforts.
