Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has pledged to fully support whoever emerges as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate in the 2026 primaries, regardless of whether he secures the ticket himself.
Atiku made this declaration on Saturday during a welcome event in Lagos State for new defectors from the Labour Party (LP) and ADC, who have now joined the ADC-led coalition movement. He was represented at the event by Prof. Ola Olateju, who served as the guest speaker.
“It is not a thing we can predetermine. Whoever emerges through free and fair contests, we are all going to support,” Atiku said.
He assured the party faithful that all aspirants would be given equal opportunities and a level playing field, adding that no one would be imposed on the party.
“We are not imposing anyone on the people,” he added, stressing that the ADC candidate would ultimately represent the interests of all Nigerians.

The event also featured notable ADC leaders including National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, Senator Kolawole Ogunwale, and State Chairman George Ashiru, who formally welcomed the new members into the party.
ADC’s growing coalition, 2027 outlook
The ADC is gaining momentum as a third-force coalition, with key figures from other parties—including the Labour Party (LP) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—beginning to align under its umbrella.
Three top contenders are currently seen as frontrunners for the ADC presidential ticket:
-
Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President
-
Peter Obi, 2023 LP presidential candidate
-
Chibuike Amaechi, former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation
With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, the ADC appears to be positioning itself as a serious alternative to the APC and PDP, with a focus on coalition-building, internal democracy, and broad-based national representation.
