Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has pledged that leaders of the newly formed opposition coalition will fully back whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 elections.
Speaking in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, the former Rivers State governor emphasised the coalition’s commitment to a credible selection process.
“The moment anybody emerges from the primary, all of us will support; that’s the agreement,” Amaechi told journalists.
“We insist on a free and fair, transparent primary,” he added.
Amaechi, a former stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also aimed at the current administration, highlighting the rising hardship and hunger across the country.
Amaechi calls on Rivers to support party
He urged the people of Rivers State to throw their support behind the ADC and work towards unseating the ruling party in the next general elections.
“Every Rivers man who thinks good of the state and country should move to register with the new party and ensure that we remove the current government and stop the hunger that everybody is suffering from,” he said.
The ADC has become the coalition’s chosen platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s expected re-election bid. The group includes several high-profile politicians such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, both of whom ran for president in 2023.
Other notable figures backing the movement are former Senate President David Mark and ex-Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai. Mark, now serving as the coalition’s interim chairman, declared at its unveiling on July 2 that the alliance aims to “save the country’s democracy” and prevent Nigeria from slipping into a one-party system.
