Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, has urged lawmakers to renew their dedication to addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges, with an emphasis on national development and legislative reforms.
During a plenary session on Tuesday, which marked the Senate’s return after the holiday break, Akpabio made this call for renewed commitment.
In his speech titled “Rising to the Greatness of Our Calling”, he emphasised the necessity for a collective resolve to transform Nigeria into a nation characterized by progress and hope.
He highlighted the significance of the national budget, describing it as not merely a financial tool but as a reflection of the hopes and aspirations of millions of Nigerians.
The Senate President also stressed the urgency of completing electoral reforms ahead of the next election cycle.
“Electoral reform is not just a legislative task; it is a moral obligation,” he remarked, noting that a transparent and credible electoral system is crucial to Nigeria’s democratic stability.

Addressing the broader challenges facing the nation, Akpabio called for steadfast prayers for peace and unity, urging his fellow senators to recognize the power of collective intercession in guiding the nation’s leaders and uniting its citizens.
Akpabio encouraged the senators to meet the challenges ahead with excellence, commitment, and a focus on nation-building.
“Our work here is more than legislation; it is about shaping the future of our nation and leaving a legacy for future generations,” he concluded.
He stressed that we are now at the end of the first quarter of the 21st century, a time demanding bold action and visionary leadership.
“History calls on us to make a difference and craft a new narrative for our nation—one of progress, justice, and limitless possibilities,” Akpabio affirmed.
With optimism for the year ahead, he called on his colleagues to unite in purpose and work toward the common good.
