It was a day of dual significance in Ondo State as Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa combined administrative support for workers with a solemn tribute to Nigeria’s military veterans.
On Monday, the governor presented operational vehicles to major labour unions and launched the ₦5 million Emblem Appeal Fund, personally donating his one-month salary to support the families of fallen soldiers.
In a bid to enhance coordination and service delivery, Aiyedatiwa handed over brand-new buses to four key organisations: the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and the National Union of Pensioners (NUP).

Addressing the union leaders, the governor emphasised that these vehicles are intended to ease transportation challenges, allowing executives to better engage with the government and serve their members.
A former educator himself, Aiyedatiwa shared a personal moment with the teachers’ union.
“As a former teacher, I present this bus to support your mobility and ensure efficient service to your members,” he remarked.
He also had special words for the retirees of the NUP, describing them as “retired, but not tired,” and noting that the facility would help them navigate government offices with dignity.
Following the presentation, the governor moved to the Cocoa Conference Centre to kickstart activities for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
In a profound show of commitment, Aiyedatiwa inaugurated the ₦5 million Emblem Appeal Fund and pledged his entire salary for the month to the cause.
He stated that the day is more than a ceremony; it is a moral obligation to care for the widows, children, and dependents of those who died defending the nation.
During the ceremony, the governor revealed that the state had increased financial subventions to the Nigerian Legion.
He also urged NGOs and corporate bodies to partner with the government in empowering veterans.
Additionally, he congratulated the newly elected executives of the Nigerian Legion, describing their role as “critical.”
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Seun Osamaye, noted that the funds raised would provide educational and support services for the families of incapacitated officers and fallen heroes.

Echoing her sentiment, the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion in Ondo State, Major Folorunso Akingboju, praised the Governor’s “unwavering support,” affirming that the welfare of veterans remains a top priority under the current administration.
The event concluded with a call for all residents to wear the remembrance emblem with pride, ensuring the labour of Nigeria’s heroes never remains in vain.
