The lawmaker representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency in Benue State, Philip Agbese, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and defected to the Labour Party (LP).
Agbese, who currently serves as the Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, announced his defection on Tuesday through a statement shared on his official Facebook page.
In the statement, the lawmaker said his decision was driven by what he described as a “higher call” to serve his constituents with sincerity, humility, and commitment under the platform of the Labour Party.
“I am answering a higher call to serve my people with sincerity, humility, and commitment,” he wrote, expressing optimism about his new political affiliation.
He also disclosed that he had been warmly received by fellow lawmakers within the National Assembly who are members of the Labour Party, describing the reception as encouraging and reaffirming.
Agbese praised the leadership of the party, referencing its National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, whom he commended for promoting a unifying and inclusive political vision.
According to him, joining the Labour Party presents an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to rebuilding and strengthening the party’s structure, particularly in Benue State.
“As the highest political office holder of the party from Benue State, I understand the responsibility of building and re-energising the party for victory across the board,” he stated.
The lawmaker emphasised that his approach would prioritise inclusiveness, mutual respect, and active participation of all members, both old and new, in advancing the party’s goals.
His defection adds to the growing wave of political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, as politicians across the country reposition within parties in pursuit of strategic advantage.
Observers say such movements could significantly influence party dynamics and electoral outcomes, particularly in key states like Benue.
