The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Tinubu administration of “shamelessly abdicating responsibility” after the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, linked recent terrorist attacks in Kebbi and Kwara States to remarks made by United States President Donald Trump.
In a strongly worded press statement issued on Thursday and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described the claim as “amateurish deflection” and evidence that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government is “overwhelmed” and “clueless” in tackling Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.
“The APC-led Federal Government now claims its security failures are caused by a tweet by the President of another country,” the statement read.
“This is a shameful abdication of responsibility, a confirmation that the Tinubu government is overwhelmed by the security situation in the country and has no idea how to solve it.”
The opposition party highlighted that banditry, mass abductions, and attacks on schools and places of worship have escalated under successive APC administrations, particularly since President Bola Tinubu took office in May 2023.
It accused the government of emboldening terrorists through consistent failure to respond decisively.
“It is disingenuous to blame one tweet for the state of insecurity in Nigeria,” the ADC continued.
“Those killing Nigerians did not need instigation by Trump; they have been actively encouraged by a government that consistently fails to act.”
The statement questioned Nigeria’s sovereignty, asking how a nation that prides itself on independence could attribute domestic terror attacks to a single social media post from Washington.
It further challenged the administration to reveal any threat assessment or mitigation measures taken in response to President Trump’s alleged remarks, rather than using them as a convenient scapegoat.
“Nigerians are tired of this government’s mentality,” the ADC declared. “How can a government incapable of accepting responsibility be trusted to find a solution? Nigeria is under siege because of the Tinubu-led APC government’s domestic negligence and incompetence, not President Trump’s social media post.”
