The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has firmly rejected suggestions that it is being positioned as a platform to advance the presidential ambitions of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, insisting the party remains independent and self-governing.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme yesterday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, emphasised that the ADC belongs to no single individual and is open to all Nigerians, including high-profile figures such as former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.

Abdullahi dismissed speculation linking the party exclusively to Atiku as baseless and rooted in a misunderstanding of its internal structure.
He stressed that the ADC operates on the principle of collective ownership, which enables it to accommodate influential politicians from diverse political backgrounds.
“Those of us within the ADC know that the party does not belong to any one person. That is why someone like Peter Obi can join, and why Rotimi Amaechi is already a member,” he said.
The spokesperson further alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was fuelling the narrative in an at. tempt to meddle in the ADC’s internal affairs and sow confusion among its ranks.
Abdullahi assured that the selection of the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 elections would follow a transparent and credible process, with no outcome predetermined.
“Whoever eventually becomes our presidential candidate, whether Atiku or any other aspirant, will emerge through a transparent and credible process,” he declared.

The clarification comes amid heightened political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general elections, as opposition parties seek to consolidate and present formidable challenges to the incumbent APC.
The party’s leadership, however, maintains that such speculation will not distract from its commitment to internal democracy, inclusivity, and a level playing field for all members and potential aspirants.
