The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has praised the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, for what it described as a principled decision in recognising the party’s new leadership.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, made the statement on Wednesday following INEC’s official endorsement of the party’s newly constituted executive committee.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Abdullahi wrote:
“We congratulate ADC members and all lovers of democracy in Nigeria.
We commend @INECNigeria and its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, for standing on the right side of history and for standing up for the cause of multi-party democracy. Arise and shine, Nigeria.”

Earlier on Wednesday, INEC updated its website to reflect the newly approved executives of the ADC. The electoral commission confirmed former Senate President David Mark as National Chairman and former Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary.
Other members of the newly ratified leadership include:
-
Ibrahim Ahmad Mani – National Treasurer
-
Akibu Dalhatu – National Financial Secretary
-
Oserheimen Aigberaodion Osunbor – National Legal Adviser
The reorganisation comes after the ADC was adopted by an opposition coalition earlier this year, prompting leadership restructuring. However, a faction within the party has opposed the changes, claiming ownership and questioning the legitimacy of the new leadership.
Despite internal resistance, Abdullahi said the recognition by INEC marked a victory for democratic values and signalled the party’s readiness to move forward under its new leadership structure.
