The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has intensified moves to broaden its political reach ahead of the 2027 general election, urging former President Goodluck Jonathan, ex-Senate President Bukola Saraki, and other high-profile political figures to align with the party.
The call followed the inauguration of the ADC’s North-East Zonal Congress Committee, an exercise the party described as part of a renewed strategy to strengthen its internal framework, entrench internal democracy, and reposition itself as a viable national alternative.
Details of the development were contained in a communiqué issued on Tuesday by the party’s factional National Chairman, Nafiu Gombe, after the inauguration ceremony held in Gombe State on January 11. The event, organised by the ADC’s national leadership, was presided over by Dr Muhammad Muhammad.
Gombe said the inauguration marked a major step toward consolidating the party’s foothold in the North-East and ensuring that congresses across the zone are conducted in a transparent and credible manner.
According to the communiqué, key officials were ratified and sworn in to oversee the zonal congress process. Mrs Patience Alex was named Chairperson of the North-East Zonal Congress Committee, while Mr Abayomi Adekunle was inaugurated as Chairman of the Zonal Appeal Committee.
Gombe noted that the appointments underscored the ADC’s determination to deepen internal democracy and build a trustworthy political platform capable of drawing support from Nigerians across party lines.
As part of this drive, the party extended an open invitation to several serving governors, elder statesmen, and national leaders to join its ranks, describing itself as an emerging alternative force in the country’s political space.
He said, “The authentic national leadership of the ADC passionately appeals to and invites the following eminent personalities to join the party in its mission to rebuild and reposition Nigeria.
“Those invited include the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed; the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri; former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki; former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan; Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde; Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti; and Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
“The ADC believes their experience, leadership, and patriotism are crucial in uniting efforts to make Nigeria great again.”
The party reaffirmed its commitment to providing what it described as a credible, inclusive, and progressive political platform anchored on good governance, national cohesion, and sustainable development.
It added that it would continue to mobilise Nigerians across all regions in support of a new political direction focused on accountability, equity, and the shared goal of making Nigeria great again.
The latest move comes amid growing political realignments, just weeks after the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, defected to the ADC chaired by David Mark.
ADC in talks with PDP, NNPP
Earlier, the ADC confirmed preliminary discussions with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) regarding a possible alliance to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, disclosed this during a media briefing in Abuja last Saturday.
He indicated that the talks form part of broader efforts to realign opposition forces amid growing concerns over the state of the nation.
Abdullahi stressed, however, that the primary objective of any potential coalition is not simply to unseat President Bola Tinubu, but to address the profound challenges facing Nigerians and improve their quality of life.
He described the current situation as an “existential challenge” unprecedented in the country’s history, citing deteriorating economic and social indices that have left many citizens disillusioned.
“We are having preliminary conversations. It is possible, and like we said, any party, any group of politicians or political group that is willing to work with us because the situation we face today as a country is an existential challenge,” Abdullahi said.
Atiku rejects stepping down as daughter joins party
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that he will not withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, amid growing contest for ADC ticket.
Atiku, a presidential aspirant on the platform of the African Democratic Congress, made the declaration in a statement issued last Tuesday and signed by his media aide, Paul Ibe.
This paper reported that the former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate stressed that all aspirants would submit themselves to a presidential convention, noting that the ADC leadership had assured members of an open, transparent and competitive process for selecting its flagbearer. He warned that any call for him to step aside amounted to a betrayal of democratic values and an attempt to advance authoritarian rule.
Fatima Atiku Abubakar, the first daughter of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, last Monday officially joined ADC.
The New Daily Prime had reported that Fatima, a medical doctor and former Commissioner for Health in Adamawa State, was formally received into the party in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, Fatima expressed excitement about her decision to join the ADC, describing the party as a credible platform that aligns with her values and political beliefs. She noted that the ADC’s growing role as a rallying point for opposition leaders seeking political change influenced her move.
