Former Abia State governor and senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has said he will not support the re-election bid of Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, in the 2027 governorship election.
Kalu, who spoke during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, emphasised that political allegiance must take precedence over personal relationships.
While acknowledging his cordial relationship with Otti, Kalu maintained that their differing party affiliations make it inevitable for them to stand on opposite sides of the contest. The senator is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), whereas Otti belongs to the Labour Party.
“I always believe if he wants to be his party, be your party and vote for your party. I’m a member of APC. I will work for APC. He should work for Labour Party. We should not lose friendship,” Kalu said.
He noted that political rivalry should not erode personal bonds, stressing that preserving peace and stability in Abia State remains paramount.
However, the former governor was unequivocal about his position regarding the next governorship race.
“I will oppose it because my party will be fielding a candidate. That’s it. It is about the interest of the party,” he stated.
Despite his respect for the governor, Kalu made it clear that party interest would guide his actions ahead of 2027.
