President Bola Tinubu has authorized the immediate release of funds to settle pension arrears, salary increments, and other entitlements owed to retired military personnel.
This decision follows two days of peaceful protests by military veterans at the Federal Ministry of Finance.
Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, announced the development on Friday, expressing appreciation for the President’s timely intervention.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Henshaw Ogubike, Matawalle confirmed that military personnel have already started receiving alerts for the three-month salary increase.
The minister lauded Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of both active and retired military personnel, emphasizing that the administration is prioritizing the resolution of outstanding pension arrears to improve the quality of life for veterans.
Matawalle also praised the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, for his efforts in ensuring the prompt disbursement of funds.
He urged military personnel to remain dedicated to their duties, assuring them of the government’s continued support in enhancing morale and addressing security challenges across Nigeria.
“Despite initial setbacks, be assured that Mr. President is committed to uplifting our military forces as they confront the challenges of insecurity,” he stated.
Highlighting the critical role of the Nigerian military in combating insurgency, terrorism, and other forms of criminality, Matawalle reaffirmed the government’s dedication to eradicating insecurity.
He concluded by assuring the Armed Forces of President Tinubu’s steadfast support and commitment to improving their readiness and resilience in securing the nation.
