Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, fondly known as “Ijaya,” was reported by New Daily Prime to have passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, after a brief illness. This was confirmed in a statement by the House Spokesperson, Akin Rotimi. However, the details of her residence were not disclosed.
In 1984, she studied Mass Communication at Ogun State Polytechnic. She also earned an HNC in Business & Finance, became a Certified Novell Administrator (CNA), and achieved Microsoft Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification in 1999.
Before venturing into politics, Onanuga had a successful career in the private sector, working with reputable organizations such as Barclays Bank and Quaker Oats Plc, City People Magazine reports in an interview with her in 2019. Her experience in the corporate world equipped her with the skills and expertise necessary to navigate the complexities of politics.
In 2019, she contested and won the elections to represent the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency in Ogun State, Nigeria, on the platform of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) and re-elected in 2023.
She was elected as the Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th House of Representatives on July 4, 2023, a position she held until her passing on January 15, 2025. As a woman, her legacy will continue to inspire and motivate others to pursue careers in politics and public service.
